The goal of the Fund is to support Māori to achieve their potential in the workplace, and contribute to thriving, innovative and resilient businesses. Te Puni Kōkiri partners with eligible employers to:

  • support structured and tailored mentoring, training and development, and skills and qualifications-acquisition, for Māori staff in permanent jobs
  • support the development of a skilled, productive, and resilient Māori workforce
  • provide funding to the employer of up to $10,000 per cadet per year
  • promote more productive and connected businesses.

Te Puni Kōkiri cadetships programme is open and applications are being invited from organisations from the regions who will develop, mentor, train and develop full-time permanent Māori staff in order for them to move in to more senior roles within their organisation

The Cadetship programme came about following the Māori Economic Summit and the Prime Minister’s Job Summit. It was a specific response to the Global Financial Crisis and provides opportunities for Māori (especially young Māori) to upskill and progress their career and development pathways, and supports employers to recruit, retain and develop Māori staff.
