NMIT are now able to offer the following two Adult and Community Education programmes for free, available either face to face, blended or fully online in a variety of locations:

 

Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the iwi of Te Tauihu
To increase the understanding and awareness of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and The Treaty of Waitangi within the regional context of Te Tauihu o te Waka a Māui (Top of the South Island of New Zealand). It will give individuals and workplaces increased confidence to support their continuing engagement with the iwi of Te Tauihu.

 

On successful completion of this course learners will be able to:

  • Discuss the key principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and The Treaty of Waitangi, and how they relate to Te Tauihu
  • Explain early Aotearoa/New Zealand history, inclusive of both Māori and non-Māori viewpoints
  • Identify the iwi of Te Tauihu o Te Waka a Māui

The course is 40 hours long and can be undertaken in any of the following ways:

  • Face to face – 40 hours delivered face to face in various locations throughout the region, 2 hours per week
  • Blended – 20 hours face to face in various locations throughout the region, 1 hour face to face and 1 hour online per week
  • Online – 40 hours online undertaken at your own pace and the comfort of your own home or office.

Te Reo Māori me ngā Tikanga o Te Tauihu

This course will introduce te reo me ona tikanga Māori within the context of Te Tau ihu o te Waka a Maui (Top of the South Island of New Zealand). Students will be introduced to cultural concepts and practices, pronunciation, greetings, songs, and forms of language appropriate to work, home and community contexts.

On successful completion of this course learners will be able to:

  • Prepare and deliver a paku mihi according to set instructions
  • Learn and perform a waiata
  • Learn and perform a karakia, demonstrating understanding of appropriate associated tikanga according to Tauihu o Te Waka a Māui Iwi

The course is 40 hours long and can be undertaken in any of the following ways:

  • Face to face – 40 hours delivered face to face in various locations throughout the region, 2 hours per week
  • Blended – 20 hours face to face in various locations throughout the region, 1 hour face to face and 1 hour online per week
  • Online – 40 hours online undertaken at your own pace and the comfort of your own home or office.
