About COVID-19
What to do if you are diagnosed with COVID-19
If you are diagnosed with COVID-19 you will be told what to do by your medical professional.
This will include:
- Self-isolating
- Telling people you know
- Telling people at the places where you have been recently, eg: your local gym
Tikanga Māori and gatherings
Influenza vaccine
To look after our community and make sure our health system is there for those who need it most, we all need to look after our vulnerable populations.
One way to do this is to make sure those most at risk of influenza, get immunised first.
Get vaccinated against influenza early if you are one of these priority groups:
- Eligible patients (talk to your doctor, nurse of pharmacist if you think your health condition qualifies you)
- Pregnant women
- People aged 65+
- Eligible children (talk you your doctor if your child has a chronic health condition).
Contact the Ngāti Tama offices for more information on a flu vaccine subsidy on 03 548 1740 or 0800 8262 494 or pouawhina@ngati-tama.iwi.nz
Vulnerable people
Some members of our community are more vulnerable to COVID-19. Or, you might live with an at-risk person and want information on how to protect their health. Visit the Ministry of Health website(external link)(external link) for more information.
At risk people include:
- Those over 70: Older people often have underlying health issues, including respiratory issues that make them more vulnerable to COVID-19.
- People with medical conditions: Underlying medical conditions can make you more vulnerable to COVID-19. In particular, people with respiratory conditions, such as COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), heart conditions, high blood pressure, kidney problems and diabetes.
- People undergoing a treatment for cancer and blood conditions: As treatments for cancer and blood conditions affect people’s immune systems, this makes them more vulnerable to COVID-19.
- Pregnant women: Health experts do not yet know if pregnant women are impacted by COVID-19 in the same way as other people. However, pregnant women experience changes in their bodies that may increase their risk from some infections.
- People without easy access to healthcare
