Ka Uruora Te Tauihu supports financial
independence and improved wellbeing

Recently Ngāti Tama, Ngāti Rārua, Rangitāne and Te Ātiawa Iwi launched Ka Uruora Te Tauihu,
a programme of services to support iwi members to achieve financial independence and wellbeing.

An innovative iwi-led programme, its goals are three-fold.

  • Firstly, Te Uru Ahupūtea – the provision of a financial literacy education programme.
  • Secondly, Te Urunga Kāinga (Housing), to support iwi members to access affordable,
healthy kāinga and home ownership opportunities, and
  • Thirdly, Te Uru Tahua (WhānauSaver) a whānau savings programme.

Ka Uruora Te Tauihu chairman Hemi Sundgren said the programme brought together iwi and financial experts to
facilitate benefits for whānau who may not have had access to support like this in the past.

“It’s no secret that so many of our wider whānau have struggled to access support and services like this, so we are
really just trying to be a part of the solution … we are iwi-led, we know our whānau and we hope to be able to bridge
the gaps to create opportunities and pathways that are transformative and impactful.”

Available now: Te Uru Ahupūtea (financial education)

The initial programme, Ka Uruora Te Uru Ahupūtea (Financial Education), will be launched immediately and made available to iwi members,
this component will provide comprehensive financial education, imparting vital knowledge and skills for whānau in their pathway to kāinga
solutions and home ownership.

Additionally, Ka Uruora Te Tauihu will introduce two future initiatives: Te Urunga Kāinga (Housing) and Te Uru Tahua (WhānauSaver).

These forthcoming programmes will offer further support and opportunities to help whānau access affordable housing options,
as well as facilitate savings and investment strategies for registered iwi members.

Justin Carter, Deputy Chair of Ka Uruora Te Tauihu says :

“Ka Uruora Te Tauihu is our way of giving our people the tools they need to take control of their financial future and overall
wellbeing. We’re creating something that’s not just for us here and now, but for our tamariki, mokopuna, and the generations
to come. So, this is more than a launch. It’s us saying to our iwi, ‘this is important, we have got your back, and we’re here to
support you to grow and thrive’.”

The Ka Uruora Te Tauihu has been supported by the Rātā Foundation, Te Puni Kōkiri and Te Tūāpapa Kura Kāinga.
