WCO Te Waikoropupū Hearing

This week there is to be a sitting of the Environment Court to hear submissions on the recommendation of the Special Tribunal for a water conservation order to be made on Te Waikoropupū. The videoconference link below is available to Ngāti Tama to observe the proceedings this week.

He Wānanga Tā Moko ki Te Tauihu

We are excited to call for expression of interests to participate in a two-day wānanga tāmoko, hosted in collaboration by Ngāti Tama, Wakatū Incorporation and NRAIT at Te Āwhina marae.

This wānanga is about coming together to engage in whakawhanaungatanga, reo, tikanga and whakaaro around tāmoko lead by tāmoko practitioners, Que Bidois (Te Ati Awa, Ngati Toa, Ngati Ranginui) and Hemi Sundgren (Te Ātiawa ki Whakarongotai, Ngāti Toa, Ngāti Mutunga, Ngāti Raukawa). There is also the opportunity for whānau to receive moko by Que over the weekend at the expense of the participant. This wānanga is inclusive and welcomes whānau with an interest in understanding or practising tāmoko.

Ngā rā: 9am 10 September -7pm 11 September
Utu: Kore (free), travel subsidy grant is available for eligible registered whānau
Kei hea: Te Āwhina Marae, Motueka

To attend this wānanga, we ask that you make the commitment to stay for the duration of the kaupapa. Please complete the registration form in full and return to Pouahurea@Ngati-Tama.iwi.nz by 2 September 2022. Ngāti Tama whānau are invited to come and learn more about Maratiki and Puanga with Whakanui i te Kāhui Whetū

Kei Hea: during our 2022 whānau wānanga in Mohua.
The rising of Puanga and Matariki is a time for us to come together, remember loved ones who are no longer with us, give thanks for the year that has passed, kōrero about whānau aspirations, how we give back, and kōrero about how we continue to celebrate Matariki and Puanaga.
Our travel subsidy will still be available for registered adult members to attend our upcoming whānau wānanga & hui-ā-tau. Application forms will be available at the hui-ā-tau and wānanga, where whānau must be present to apply. Scheduled shuttles from Nelson to Mohua (return) will be available for whānau.

It is with sadness that we advise of the passing of John Tahana Ward-Holmes who passed away on Sunday 17th April 2022, surrounded by whānau. We send our aroha, manaaki and awhi to the whānau pani at this time.
John has been an enduring figure for Ngāti Tama, particularly in Mohua, where he was born, raised and spent nearly all of his adult life. He has been a pillar of leadership in Mohua over this time. His legacy of kaitiakitanga, manaakitanga and whanaungatanga is embodied in the lasting connections he has made with restoring matauranga to ensure our tohora practices are ongoing, the paepae at Onetahua is maintained, and the mana of Te Waikoropupū Springs are upheld. These are only some of Johns many contributions to not only Ngāti Tama but the community at large.
John is now with his whānau at his kainga at 245 Grant Road, Puramāhoi and are welcoming manuhiri from today. To uphold Taranaki tikanga in terms of welcoming, the whānau have decided to stagger the groups going on, to the following times; 9am, 11am, 2pm & 4pm to allow for breaks. If you are vulnerable then please wear a mask, and if you are unwell, or feel unwell, the whanau have respectfully asked that you stay safe at home.
John’s service will be on Friday 22nd April 2022, at 11am, 245 Grant Road, Puramāhoi. He will then be taken to Rototai Urupa for burial at approximately 1pm. The Weather is looking wet, so if you are heading over it is advised to wear the appropriate footwear and clothing.

Hui-ā-Tau: Saturday 25th June, 10am-1pm

Tēnā koutou e te iti, e te rahi e whakarauika mai nei ki tēnei marae kōrero o Ngāti Tama.  Tuatahi, me huri ō tātou ngākau ki te hunga kua nunumi atu ki te pō, haere, oti atu rā.  Ko rātou te hunga wairua ki rātou, ko tātou ngā mahuetanga iho o rātou mā, tēnā koutou, tēnā tātou katoa.

Welcome to this platform to help us ‘hiki wairua’ – boost our spirits and encourage us to keep doing what we’re doing during this trying time of the Covid-19 lockdown. We will take this opportunity to provide ‘food for thought’ with some snippets from our local history in Te Tauihu, discussion about place names and customs, some Māori language tips, waiata and karakia.

Te Hiki Wairua o Ngāti Tama ki Te Tauihu gives whānau the opportunity to connect with their whakapapa and iwi through stories, information and teachings. This pānui will be a regular segment, each week focusing on different aspects of Ngāti Tama, we welcome whānau contribution.

This publication will also include information and resources for whānau support, updates, wellbeing and health.
